Who We Are
Every year students from the University of British Columbia work together to design and construct a scale model steel bridge. We are a student-run organization that welcomes students from all year levels as well as from any department. If you are looking to gain hands-on experience in a dynamic team environment, this is the right place for you.
What We Do
We participate in the annual Regional and National Steel Bridge Competitions hosted by The American Society of Civil Engineers. We work to design, fabricate, and construct a scale model steel bridge defined by the competition rules published anew each year. In the 2017 competitions, our bridge spanned a length of 20’ 9” and carried a total load of 2500lb without significant deflections.
Why We Do This
The design and fabrication stages of the project, as well as the actual competitions, are extremely rewarding to the students. During the design process, we offer students the opportunity to apply their technical knowledge in the design and analysis of steel trusses. Students are also taught to use AutoCAD, S-Frame, and SolidWorks, three programs which students are given very little exposure to in class. In the fabrication and construction process, students have the chance to work hands-on and see their project come to life. Attending the competitions allow the students to exchange knowledge with teams from other schools and learn from other outstanding students.
Why We Need Your Help
Designing a steel bridge that aims to be stiff and lightweight requires dedication from the entire team in many aspects. The materials we utilize, the fabrication process and attending three competitions a year all require financial assistance. As a sponsor, you have the opportunity to have direct, positive impact on the success of our project as well as helping students develop their skills and become experts in their field of study.
By becoming a sponsor, you will be recognized for all your support and contributions by featuring your company in the media, public relations events, and at our competitions. You will also have opportunities to build strong relationships with some of the most talented students for potential employees.
